Driving licences in the EU - conditions

Driver training and driving test

The requirements for obtaining a driving licence in Hungary are as follows:

  • You will need to enrol at an accredited driving school and complete the statutory number of hours' theoretical and practical training, which will vary depending on the category of licence you require.
  • The minimum requirements for the number of training hours are laid down in Decree No 24/2005 of the Minister for Economy and Transport of 21 April 2005 on the detailed rules for training and examining drivers of road vehicles and road transport expertshu (in Hungarian only). The table in point 3.2.1 of Annex 3 to this Decree gives full information on minimum training hours. The legislation requires trainee drivers to complete practical training in night, urban and non-urban driving.
  • In order to demonstrate that you have the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to satisfy the test requirements, you will need to pass a theory test, practical driving test and basic first aid test.
  • An example: If you wish to obtain a general category "B" driving licence needed to drive a passenger car, you will have to follow a theory course of at least 28 hours, which will also include rules of the highway code, driving theory and vehicle operation and maintenance. The minimum 29 hours of driving practice are divided into 9 hours of initial and 20 hours of main training. The main training consists of at least 14 hours urban driving, 4 hours highway driving and 2 hours night driving, and the learner and instructor must prove that they have jointly covered a distance of at least 580 km. After passing the theory test and a practical driving test off the public road, you will then have to pass the driving test proper. You may not take the full driving test until you have passed the basic first aid test and received the relevant certificatehu.

Driving schools organising training generally also, as part of the training package (and generally for a fee or as an integral part of the course price), see to the administrative formalities for obtaining the driving licence. The learner driver's contribution is only to approve these administrative formalities and to comply with his/her own training and test obligations during the process.
