Rules on gender change

Legal change of gender is possible in most EU countries. However, the process and the criteria to get your affirmed gender recognised with legal effects differ from country to country.

Some EU countries allow for self-determination, also known as self-identification. This makes it possible for you to change the legal sex marker on your official documents (birth certificates, passports, identity cards…) via a simple declaration. Some countries allow you to do this online.

Once the legal gender change process has been completed, you are considered your chosen gender for all purposes.

This area is undergoing many legislative changes. Check the website of each EU country for the latest updates.
