Getting funding

EU funding is either managed directly by the EU, jointly by EU and member state authorities, or indirectly through implementing partners.

How you can apply and how you will be evaluated, is determined by the management mode of each of the EU funding programmes.

EU grants

To apply for an EU grant (i.e., funding you do not have to pay back), you need to answer to a call for proposals by the European Commission on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. The site is accompanied by a section on how to participate.

For strategic technologies, dedicated funding is published on the Strategic Technologies for Europe Portal (STEP Portal).

Repayable EU funding at national level

Calls for proposals launched by EU member states are published on national portals. They explain which regions are covered, who can apply, the amount of funding allocated to each call, the related EU programmes and policy objectives, and the relevant timelines.

Repayable EU funding implemented by partners

For various types of investments, the EU channels funding (including equity, loans, and guarantees) through so-called Implementing Partners, i.e., the European Investment Bank Group and other international financial institutions, national promotional banks and institutions, and a network of local financial intermediaries across the European Union.

InvestEU is a programme that backs financial products such as senior, subordinated, and venture debt, as well as intermediated and direct equity and guarantees to financial intermediaries.
