Workers - residence rights – Portugal
EU citizens must carry at least one valid identity document (identity card, citizen's card or passport) as a means of identification if they are approached by the police.
If they cannot produce an identity document when requested to do so by the authorities, the following would be required:
- Identification of the person by a third party; the third party must produce proof of the EU citizen's identity; that person must accompany the third party to the place where these documents are kept.
- If it is not possible to carry out these steps, the EU citizen will be taken to the nearest police station, where they will remain for the time necessary for the authorities to establish their identity. This must not exceed 2 hours.
