Car registration in another EU country – Slovakia
Car registration rules
As an EU national moving to the Slovak Republic, you are not required to register your car there. You can use your vehicle with a valid licence plate, registration certificate and proof of insurance (Green card). If the vehicle needs to have a mandatory technical and emission controls, it is also necessary to have a valid record of such controls. It is not decisive who the owner of the vehicle is.
If the vehicle meets the abovementioned conditions, the period of use of the vehicle registered abroad is not limited.
For students studying in the Slovak Republic from another EU country, there is no obligation to re-register the vehicle, and it is not decisive whether the vehicle is owned by the student's parent or someone else. They just have to have the Green card.
Road taxes in the Slovak Republic need to be paid only by business entities registered abroad. The international Green Insurance Card is sufficient. As the vehicle does not need to be re-registered, there is no need for any student to have a confirmation record from the University.
If a student with valid Slovak residence decided to re-register the vehicle, they need to ask the District Office (Department of traffic) for approval of technical qualification first and then pass a roadworthiness check.
Pensioners, second homeowners and cross-border commuters

Time allowed for re-registering a vehicle
There is no re-registration time limit. If the vehicle has been logged off from another state, it is necessary to ask the District Office Traffic Department for approval of technical qualification and then pass a roadworthiness.
Temporary registration plates
Temporary registration plates are issued by the states where the vehicle was purchased. Such plates can be used for:
- the approval or recognition of the technical qualification of your vehicle
- for carrying out a vehicle originality check or technical and emission control
- for registering a vehicle at Traffic Department
Fees are handled by each state separately. The re-registration of the vehicle is considered to be permanent, the principle of temporary vehicle registration (e.g. during the study) is not established.
There is no such system as vehicle taxes in the Slovak Republic. The tax on motor vehicles in the Slovak Republic applies only to business entities that have registered a vehicle in the Slovak Republic and use it for business purposes. You can get more information about taxes at the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic.
The list of persons who are not required to pay the administrative fees is set up in Section 4 of Act no. 145/1995 Coll. about administrative fees.
