Getting a driving licence in the EU – Netherlands

EU driving licences - conditions

Driver training & driving test

To obtain a driving licence, you:

  • must sign up with an approved driving school.
  • must pass a theory exam and a practical test organised by the CBR.

Age requirement

The minimum age at which you can obtain a driving licence is:

Category A1 (up to 125 cc) 18 years
Category A2 (up to 35 kW cc) 20 years
Category A (over 35 kW cc) 22 years (if you do need have the A2 licence for a period of 2 years the mimum age is 24)
Category B (passenger cars) 17 years (will need a coach in car till 18)

Fitness to drive

If you wish to renew an EU driving licence, you:

  • do not need to undergo a medical check
  • must undergo a medical check if the self-declaration indicates so.
