Getting a driving licence in the EU – Italy

EU driving licences - conditions

Driver training & driving test

To obtain a driving licence, you:

  • must sign up with an approved driving school for at least 6 hours of practical training,
  • must pass a theory exam and a practical test organised by an agency of the Ministry of Transport (Ministero dei Trasporti – Motorizzazione civile).

Age requirement

The minimum age at which you can obtain a driving licence is:

Category A1 (up to 125 cc) 16 years
Category A2 (up to 35 kW cc) 18 years
Category A (over 35 kW cc) 21 years
Category B (passenger cars) 18 years

Fitness to drive

If you wish to renew a category A or B driving licence, you must undergo a medical check:

  • every 10 years up to the age of 50
  • every 5 years between the ages of 50 and 70
  • every 3 years between the ages of 70 and 80
  • every 2 years over the age of 80
