Company cars – Germany
If you want to drive a company car registered in another EU country in Germany you must register it there.
Registration in Germany is not required if you only want to drive it there for up to one year. This temporary use is, however, conditional on the car not being mainly located in Germany (which is possible, for example, in the case of cross-border commuters).
The following conditions must be met in the case of temporary use:
- The vehicle must have been certified by a competent body in the other EU country with a valid registration certificate containing certain minimum information;
- This certificate must be kept in the vehicle;
- The vehicle must always be safe to drive and safe for road use.
Private use of your company car
From a legal point of view, you may use the company car in Germany for private purposes. However, you must also abide by the rules on this point in your contract of employment.
Lending your company car to a family member
If you use your company car in Germany, you can legally lend the car to your spouse or children. However, you must also abide by the rules on this point in your contract of employment.
