The construction of the EU pavilion: from start to finish, and everything in between

World Expos represent for nations and international organisations an opportunity to discuss issues of global relevance and to share with citizens the latest innovations related to the Expo’s theme.

The event attracts millions of visitors from all over the world who discover and enjoy hundreds of pavilions, exhibitions and cultural presentations. But, what happens before Expo opens its doors? What does it take for participants to prepare for this major event, and how are these attractions built?

Explore in these series of images the brick by brick journey of the making of the EU pavilion.

This is where it all began: the foundations of the European Union pavilion under the sunny sky of Milan.

Location was a top priority. The EU pavilion is situated within the Italian pavilion and overlooks the Lake Arena, the largest open space for the Expo’s visitors.

The building was designed to cover 1,900 sqm across three floors: the ground floor houses the visitor experience; the second floor has a conference room that will host over 200 policy and scientific presentations and the rooftop terrace will be dedicated to special events.

For over two years, hundreds of experts joined their talent and creativity to develop this allegorical pavilion that celebrates the union between tradition and innovation, agriculture and science.

240 unique pieces of art were specially developed for the visitor experience.

“The Golden Ear” short film, featured in the visitor experience, required 52,000 individually animated frames and 38,000 hours of work. The film is projected in high-definition with a 4K resolution.

360 to 420 guests per hour will have an immersive experience in the special effects theatre where state-of-the-art equipment such as scent machines, water spritzers, lightning generators and a floor that rumbles give the film a new dimension.

Three interactive screens with sophisticated touch technology, will present in an educational and entertaining manner the EU policies and actions linked to the pavilion’s theme: “Growing Europe’s Future Together for a Better World”.

Pay us a visit, the EU pavilion is ready to welcome you. Step inside to experience Europe like never before!
