EU turns 50 – Berlin gears up to celebrate

09/03/07

If you want to be part of a huge party celebrating the EU's 50th birthday, Berlin is the place to be. On 25 March, the EU will join forces with the German government to host a series of major events in the German capital, bringing people together to celebrate half a century of European integration.

As EU leaders gather for an informal summit to commemorate the EU's 50th birthday, both Berliners and visitors to the city will be invited to take part in a huge "Festival of Europe" throughout the city.

Celebrations will start on the evening of 24 March with a special “Night of beauty”. Berlin museums will open until 2am, giving visitors the chance to rediscover the continent's aesthetic heritage by viewing selected European works of art. On the same night, 27 of the city's bars and clubs will host performances by 27 bands, one from each EU member country.

On Sunday 25 March, a big open air concert Deutsch  is being organised around the Brandenburg Gate. On stage will be Italian rock singer Gianna Nannini, Berlin band MIA, Denmark's Outlandish and many more. Street performers and theatre groups from across Europe will provide off-stage entertainment, while information stands will give visitors the possibility to learn about the EU.

The same day, German chancellor Angela Merkel, commission president Barroso and European parliament president Hans-Gert Pöttering will launch a nation-wide information tour that will take in over 50 German cities.
