Europe accounts for around one third of the global market for environmental goods and services. International trade in food, including Europe’s world-renowned food products and agricultural technology and machinery, encourages and secures job creation in Europe and those countries in trade with Europe.
The food & drink industry (represented by 99% of small and medium-sized enterprises) employs more than 4 million people, giving Europe the title of the largest food exporter worldwide and second larger importer.
Amongst these facts, sustainability remains crucial. The expansion of the world’s economy is increasing unsustainable pressure on the Earth’s resources; this is predicted to worsen as the global population moves toward a massive 9 billion. Counterbalancing this, the EU helps growth and job creation by promoting transition toward a greener economy; the vision of an economy where respecting resource constraints and planetary boundaries go hand-in-hand with competitiveness, and envisioning the opportunity in waste, as a sustainable resource of the future.
A concrete action during Expo Milano 2015 to spur growth and jobs, is the series of business-to-business meetings initiated by the European Commission, Directorate General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. From May to October, several events will be organised with important EU trade partners, such as the Mediterranean partner countries, China, Japan, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, South East Asia, USA and Canada.
These events will include:
• A session where the European Commission will present the tools in favour of internationalisation and the business relations between Europe and the respective partners;
• business-to-business meetings (B2B) among companies, clusters, research centres, industry-related organizations from the EU and the concerned countries.
