Římská smlouva, jež vstoupila v platnost 1. ledna 1958, položila základy dnešní EU. Ačkoliv se původně jednalo především o hospodářskou integraci, EU se vyvinula v projekt zajišťující občanům též vysokou úroveň sociální ochrany.
