EVS - project working with mentally handicapped youngsters

project description

Stiftelsen Grobunn is an ideal establishment on the farm Frenning Vestre in Stange 12 km from the town Hamar. We offer both learning-, living- and social training for mentally handicapped youngsters who range in age from 17 to 25 years old. We can host until 20 youngsters and everything we do is based on and around the well-being and learning process of them. Our work has inspiration from the principles and philosophy of Anthroposophy. The volunteers join in the responsibility of being an example for, and an instructor for our youngsters. We support them to manage their own life out of their own precipitation.

accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The host placement is located in a Live-in community. The volunteers live together in an apartment in the Main house. They have their own sleeping rooms, but share bathroom and kitchen/living room.
During their working time the volunteers get food in the working place, in free time they can use their own kitchen to prepare meals. In addition to pocket money, they get a food-allowance. To travel around the area, the volunteers have the possibility of using a car (if they have a valid driving license). There are also bicycles and skis available for the volunteers.

training during the project

At the beginning, volunteers get needed training and support so they can complete their duties. This will help to avoid problems from the start of the program.
There is continuous support for the volunteers. Every week we have meetings and conversations where a mentor will lead these meetings and talks. Volunteers can also visit on-site or off-site training courses to get more qualifications. Voulenteres will attend Norwegian lessons in Hamar city in the first six months. The volunteers will also recieve on-arrival training and will attend a mid-semester seminar.

volunteer profile

Volunteers must be motivated for working with disabled people. It´s important that everyone is able to communicate and connect with different people. We have values, rules, regulations and goals for how we work and it is important that volunteers are interested in this and are open for guidance. People wanting to volunteer with us should not have serious physical or mental problems. Our project is on a farm, so if you have serious asthma or allergic to animals of any kind, or hay etc., Grobunn is not the right place for you. Interest in learning Norwegian and a desire to integrate is expected.
