Kindergarten Waldkindergarten - discover nature in the forest

Kindergarten Waldkindergarten - discover nature in the forest

Leipzig, Germany

1 , Closed

Project description

Kindergarten “Waldkindergarten” in Leipzig focuses on „natural education”. It currently takes care of 12 children in the nursery in the age from 1 to 2 years old and 48 children aged from three to seven years old. In the mid-2019 the kindergarten will be extended to a total of 84 places for 24 children in the nursery and 60 elder children. "Forest kindergarten" means that we spend the entire morning with children in the forest area all year round, no matter the weather. There we have suitable places, on which children divide themselves into three or four groups and decide independently about activities and play partners. The basic idea of the forest concept is to provide children with a variety of development impulses and learning opportunities through their stay in the forest. We want to enable children to act independently and on their own responsibility. We see our role in working on the topics interesting to children and accompanying this process individually.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Normally all the volunteers are living in shared flats, have their own room - but share kitchen and bathroom with 3 other volunteers. Food & pocket money will be paid out to you as well as a sum for the local transportation monthly ticket or you just buy a bike. Leipzig is a very nice city to ride a bike. If you wish we can as well try to organize a host family. We will help you to find a German language course which fits your needs and level. You will attend two seminars for volunteers from the National Agency. Together with you in the kindergarten will be working another volunteer.

Training during the project

A set of tools is available for the stay in the forest: carving knives, folding saws and drills (the use of which the children learn together with us so that they can later handle and work independently with these tools), possible unprocessed and natural materials. The volunteer's tasks are: accompanying children on the paths to the forest sites and back to the kindergarten, taking care of the free play time in the forest and in the house, helping with dressing and undressing, and taking care of lunchtime (+preparation and accompaniment of the crisp (snack in the afternoon), household tasks.

Volunteer profile

The following points are important for our kindergarten regarding the selection of the volunteers: - willingness to go to the forest with the children, no matter the weather! - interest to work with small children - interest to nature and the environment - interest to learn German - creativity (because the forest kindergarten is “without toys”, the creativity in the game is important). The working hours are determined together with the volunteer, usually from 9 to 15 or 11 to 17 o'clock - Monday to Friday. You will have 24 holiday days if your project lasts 12 months.

Additional information

The daily stay in the forest requires flexibility and a sense of responsibility from the volunteer.
We are outside with the children in all weather conditions, from pleasant temperatures to rain and snow.
This requires adaptability on the one hand and clothing appropriate to the weather and temperature on the other.
The ability to find your way into the new situation and the unfamiliar processes poses a challenge, especially in terms of language. Here, openness, courage and the joy of volunteering are important companions. Translate
