Obcianske zdruzenie Kvas
description of organisation
The civic associtaion "KVAS" was founded in Piestany in 2011 by a group of young people with experience in working in non-profit organizations as volunteers and, later on, as authors or coordinators of different projects. Piestany is a spa town located in Western Slovakia. But social life in Piestany is not only oriented towards spa clients. The town also organizes some of the most renowned music and film festivals in Central Europe (Cinematik, Grape Festival, Topfest, Lodenica, etc.).
The main goal of our association is to develop the relationship with the environment we are all part of. When we talk about the environment, we do not only refer to nature, animals and plants but also to the city, the people and the resulting relationships. We work in the environmental, cultural and community framework.
Other than events taking place at our cultural community centre, we also organize activities in the nature or at schools. We want people to feel connected with the place where they live and to be responsible in their way of thinking and acting in daily life. We think the right time for building a close relationship between man and nature or the environment is in early childhood. Therefore we carry out lots of activities with preschool kids, but then we continue also with elementary school children and teenagersas well as adults. We support and prepare many activities in which the whole family can participate, as children tend to follow the behaviour of their parents.
We manage a cultural community centre called "ZiWell". The commercial part consists of a pub-cafe, where we offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food and beverages. This is also the place where we organize most of our activities, especially in the winter time. We support the community life on a small scale, acting as a balance to the bigger events in the town that are focused on larger seasonal crowds or spa clients. ZiWell is located in the town centre, between the big city park and the main pedestrian street. The name ŽiWell is pronounced as "element" in Slovak. But it is also a Slovak-English play-on-words meaning "live well". ŽiWell welcomes all members of the local community, from families with children to students, artists, activists and senior citizens.
The ZiWell cultural community centre cooperates with a number of associations in organising different events. These include debates and presentations, craftwork markets, workshops, exhibitions (every month there is a new exhibition), cinema and theatre, sports events, concerts, folklore and dance displays, language conversations and games days for families and friends. The volunteer would have an active role in the preparation of all these events and would participate in an average of three events per week.
There are a number of activities, campaigns and events which are not directly organised by Kvas but which are made possible with the support and collaboration of our members. These include: OZ Siet dobra (community gardening), OZ KOZA, OZ Pre prirodu and OZ Slnava (environmental activities), OZ Pro Civitate (maintenance of the Lido island in Piešťany), OZ Serviam (work with disabled people), Slovensky skauting Piestany (scouts). The volunteers are encouraged to co-operate with these local associations as part of their EVS experience. The Department of Nature and Landscape Protection Male Karpaty and The Department of Nature and Landscape Protection Biele Karpaty help us with coordinating the environmental projects and they provide us technical support for some of our activities.
We are interested in building effective partnerships with organizations for youth exchanges and EVS projects with a similar profile than ours. We would like to target those participants who are truly interested in EVS, who feel they can be helpful in the activities we organise and who like our philosophy. We would be pleased if the volunteers brought their own ideas and initiatives into the various projects. For our organisation, the level and field of education of the volunteer is not as important as personal motivation, interest in our topics and willingness to learn new things.
