description of organisation

PiNA is introducing innovative education in the field of active citizenship, inter-media arts and sustainable development on a local, national and international level. PiNA was founded in 1997 following the initiative of the Open Society Institute of Slovenia, with the aim to support the development of a civil society, democratic dialogue and public access to modern tools of information and communication technology (ICT). Since 1997 the mission of PiNA is to offer quality educational, cultural, artistic and research activities in order to promote social development based on individual responsibility, critical thinking and sustainable living.

The association is based in Koper, Slovenia and has 8 office employees (bachelor degree in psychology, anthropology, cultural studies, political science and communication science) and 2 multimedia experts running the multimedia centre within the association (filming, editing, design, animation, 3D modulation). PiNA works also with other NGOs, municipalities, schools and other public bodies, institutes, colleges and universities, independent initiatives, international networks and business companies.

We run activities and projects under four programmes:

• Carrying out studies in the field of active participation and civic education and data analysis;
• Development of didactic material with special focus on development of multimedia didactics: new board games, educational films, animated videos;
• Development and delivery of training modules;
• Cross-border and Pan-european collaboration (Lifelong Learning, Europe for Citizens, IPA)

• From January 2013 we are Europe Direct Information Centre (workshops, information campaigns, seminars, round tables, info-point about EU and its programmes and activities);
• Identification and sharing of good practices with other continents;
• Cooperation with EU neighbouring countries (Anna Lind foundation);
• Promoting the learning mobility of young people, helping in improve their personal and vocational skills through the experience. Our action: PiNA TERMINAL enables yearly around 60 people to gain new knowledge and skills outside our country for a period from 6 days to 1 year (EVS,TC,YE etc).

• Data collection activities (ex Yugoslavia minorities in the region);
• Development and delivery of training modules for minorities (Funded by European social fund: creation of training modules for multimedia practitioner and cultural manager);
• Awareness-raising, information and dissemination in the fundamental rights and citizenship field;
• Establishment of cultural incubator for minorities in the region (first form of cultural incubator of this kind in Slovenia).

• New media art development;
• Promotion of creative methods on the intersection between business and creativity sectors;
• Development of project management and multimedia training method for the creativity sector;
• Development of the "Multimedia for social change" training method;
• Comprehensive multimedia production.

In short: PiNA's function is to have a positive impact on the targeted population and their orientation in the modern consumer world. With our activities we seek to encourage our surroundings to constantly reflect and critically re-think social norms, opening space for dialogue and discussion on important social issues. We aim to promote a tolerant civic dialogue and critical thinking, but in particular to promote and encourage active participation in the community. All projects implemented by PINA share a common idea - the social impact. PiNA is open to everyone and promotes equality of opportunity as well as active participation in creating its program and activities. It is important for us that people return to us and encourage others to participate as well in the creative process offered by PiNA's projects.

PiNA's project Youth Vote is a national winner of the European Charlemagne Youth Prize 2012 and was awarded by the Ministry for Education with the title Best innovative project for youth 2013. PiNA holds the status of “organization working in public interest” appointed by the Ministry of Education.

PiNA has been given grants by Erasmus + programme, the former Youth in Action Programme (Action 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 4.3), Europe for Citizens Programme (Action 2.3 and 2.1.), Anna Lindh Foundation (Projects 2012), European Youth Foundation (Action D), former Lifelong Learning Programme (Grundtvig and Leonardo Learning Partnership) and European Social Fund .
