description of organisation

The SOS-Kinderdorf in Berlin-Moabit is a social NGO that offers in a socially deprived area social services to the local families.

The SOS-Kindertagesstätte (“Kita”) is a Kindergarten, where we have about 70 children from 0 to 6 years.
The aims of our work focus on promotion of linguistic competence in German, integration of the different cultural and linguistic backgrounds of the children and families, development of I-skills, social and intercultural skills, enabling intercultural and prejudice free learning and others.

We take part in the EVS together with ijgd since about 10 years. With the integration of international volunteers we want to offer young people the opportunity to make an intercultural experience, to broaden their personal horizon and to engage in the area of international understanding.

The volunteers are integrated into the Kita-team of about 9 educaters and have a mentor-contact person. All areas of work in the Kita are open for the volunteers and they receive an introduction to the tasks in all areas. As soon as the volunteers feel to be in the position they can become involved more autonomously. We would like new impetus and own ideas to be developed and introduced in the course of the voluntary service. Small projects are welcome, creative ideas and contributions of the volunteers will be taken up and these should if at all possible be used in the daily work with the groups of children.
The EVS volunteer will be involved in the daily tasks of the Kita like:
• animation of the Kita children on the movement island, which is an open area centrally located outside the group rooms. The volunteer motivates the children to play creatively with one another, initially under the instruction of a psychomotor instructor and later under their own initiative.
• accompanying the mother-child courses with children's play offers: own ideas are very much desired such as for example songs and rhymes in their native language.
• support of a teacher in the group room: introducing own ideas and own creative offers for the children are very much desired.
• accompanying the children's groups trips
• individual occupation with one child and writing up the observations for a parent meeting. participation in the preparation and running of a parent's meeting and the post-discussion

The volunteers have the possibilities so learn about
• playing, comunication, care, relate to children
• improve laguage, cultural and social competences
• experience oneself in an active role of leading smaller acitivties with children, cultural inputs or similar
• one “cultural year” in Germany/Berlin: the Kindergarten celebrates and pursues of course old and newer traditional habbits like St. Martin, End of Ramadan, Advent, Christmas, Karneval, Easter, etc. Also German habbits/songs related to the seasons of the year for example.
• meetings families and the local area of Berlin/Moabit with its multicultural influences
• teamwork, teamdynamics, teamorganisation
• concepts of early childhood development and education, like “offene Arbeit”, early excellence and others

We like to welcome and affiliate european volunteers,
- who want to integrate people with different cultural backgrounds
- who want to learn/improve German acitvely
- who are able to engage with people without prejudices
- who maybe have experiences with migration themselves
- who are interested to learn about or already bring in intercultural competence
- who like to work with kids in different areas and
- who like to work in a team

Other important aspects:
The EVS at the SOS-Kinderdorf-Kita will start together with several other EVS-partnerprojects coordinated by “ijgd LV Berlin e.V” (ijgd). The accomodation of this group of EVS volunteers is coordinated by ijgd providing equipted flats in Berlin for 2-4 volunteers, one room each, sharing bath, kitchen and showing responsibily for the flat and the community. ijgd will assign a tutor, who will accompany the voluteers on their first days in Berlin and through the year togeter with the staff-teams of the hosting projects.

Applicants contact their EVS-sending-organization and/or please contact our EVS-coordinating partner-organization “ijgd LV Berlin e.V”. (see 2013-DE-119).
In general the volunteer service starts each year at the 1st of September and ends end of August. Applications are welcome from January on of the same year.
