The Students' Union of the University of Madeira (AAUMa) is a representative structure for students at
the University of Madeira. It is a private, nonprofit institution, ruled by its own internal statutes as well
as by applicable legislation. Recognized by the Ministry of Education and Science, it is registered in
the National Registry of Youth Unions of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth. It has also been honoured by the local government of Madeira as an Institution of Public Utility, as recognition of the merits of its on-going mission.
In AAUMa we lay emphasis, among others, upon the principles of democracy, independence and promotion of the human rights. And these are the principles that legitimize the majority of the decisions taken in accordance with the statutes and requires of the respect of minorities' rights.
Our objectives are to represent the students of UMa and protect their interests, to promote civic, physical, cultural and scientific education of its members and, above all, to claim, from the authorities that are responsible for that the best study conditions.
The AAUMa assumes itself as invigorating element, creating a joint system capable of meeting the challenges of today and the future.
In 2014, AAUMa held about 800 activities. The projects undertaken annually by AAUMa include: guided tours and scientific research in projects like Jesuits' College of Funchal and History Tellers, the University Sports activities, “Doutorecos” summer camp for children, social care projects for students like “UMajuda”, “Bolsa de Alimentação”and "Bolsa Escolar", and Media projects like “et al. magazine ”, "Contra-Factos" radio program and “Pátio dos Estudantes” on tv.
The AAUMa, currently, has about 65 volunteers and 9 persons of full-time working staff. Among employees with an employment contract, we have a master’s degree graduate, a physical education teacher and two employees who are completing their studies.
Through its various activities, the AAUMa covers different target groups, including children, youth, adults and seniors, both national and foreigner public.

  • Other experience, infrastructure and resources:

    AUMa already received 7 volunteers from different countries. Their are daily help by 4 people: the tutor, the responsible for the bureaucratic affairs, the responsible for meals and accommodation and the representative of EVS project in the Portuguese Agency. All of these members of AAUMa have Bachelor degree or Master degree. One of AAUMa preoccupations is to have people with formation in helpful areas for the European Volunteers, for that reason one of the members of EVS team is a teacher and another is ending his Master degree in teaching. Working in this project European Volunteers, there are Portuguese volunteers former students of Sciences of Culture, specialized in History, Culture, Languages and Literature.
