Ocean Znanja is a nonprofit, non-governmental organization that functions as a platform for young people. The aim of the platform is to help young people reach their full potential, to learn and grow, to develop their personal and professional skills and to be active participants in creating a society they want to live in and not just stay passive observers or onlookers. We give them the space and the possibility to try doing things not connected with their education and we encourage them working on their soft skills. Our target groups are divided in 2 segments. Firstly young people from 16-25. We propose different activities for this age group including volunteering, mobility and non-formal educational workshops. The other age group includes teachers and youth educators which we send to different training courses and encourage them to also use non-formal methods when teaching children and young people and we give them a wide range of methods that can help them in regular class. This age group is mainly from 25 - 40 as we have discovered that this age group is still open for new methods and competencies.
Some of the activities are:
Oceanova Školica Znanja: an activity held in the elementary school August Cesarec where we had tutors volunteers that were helping children with less opportunities (mainly roma cultural minority) to do their homework and to start better performing in school. This activity starts every year in September and it lasts through the whole school year.
A set of workshops conducted every 2 weeks, but from September it will be every week, on different topics; the ones coming in April and May are: 1. Design Thinking method, 2. Brain writing, 3. Sign language, 4. STEM revolution and basic programming for children 5. Business Canvas model, 6. The entrepreneur in you and so on... We have an semi annual plan of workshops where our active volunteers take turns and try and do workshops and practice their presentation skills. We leave open space for everybody that would like to try and do a workshop on a topic of their interest.
Other regular activities are: Pamela 1,2,3,4,5 (Poetry and Music Equals Legendary Art) organized every month and a half up to two months.
ECO action- cleaning a part of the river with the support of the diving club "Društvo za Podvodne Sportove", "Zlatna metla" which includes cleaning a park or part of a forest while playing geocatching, a local project starting in May this year.
Design Thinking method - we are one of the partners of a KA2 called "Design for Change" which is aiming to teach people who work with young people (including youth leaders, youthworkers, teachers, professors and trainers) the design thinking method. This activity will last until the end of 2018.
All of the people who work in Ocean Znanja so far have been volunteers and now that we have a pool of talented and motivated people with important skills we are moving towards increasing the sustainability of our projects and our organization. And hosting a EVS volunteer is a logical and thought trough step in the strategical development plan of Ocean Znanja. As we already have a sending accreditation and had some challenging experiences with partners and projects we have seen good and not so good case practices so we believe we are ready to host volunteers a provide them a meaningful learning experience and help them develop themselves as much their ready to. An EVS volunteers would, for the local community where we work, mean a lot and would give a very necessary intercultural dimension, giving our volunteers and our users an unique opportunity to learn from people from different background and have the chance to work with them. An EVS volunteer can inspire and give first hand information about the EVS experience and encourage people who don't see values in volunteering and actively participating in the society. EVS volunteers will help us fighting passivnness amongst youth and teach them that there are options to create a better future for themselves and reach their potential even without financial resources, which is the number 1 issue in Croatia when it comes to learning opportunities.
