description of organisation

Smile To The Future is a Dutch organisation founded in 2013.

In response to the rapid economic and social changes in this century, we believe that the best way to empower people is to make sure that they are able to help themselves. We are an intergenerational organsation, but we mainly target young and ambitious change makers in developing communities, as well as enthusiastic people in the Maastricht region to involve in projects. In the past 3 years, we have worked with over 450 volunteers from 55 different nationalities. Most are young, motivated, and well-educated, with idealistic goals.

All the projects we undertake have to revolve around: sustainability; self-reliance; and making a social impact.

Our objective is to break the poverty cycle and promote self-reliance by providing individuals and communities with network, capital, and knowledge:
a) Network: Having the right environment of supporting people who are able to create value for those in need.
b) Capital: Finding the right public, private or community resources.
c) Knowledge: The infrastructure in our education system has not really changed since the beginning of industrialisation. By providing knowledge in the field of entrepreneurship, social impact, and self-expression, we fill the gaps which are currently needed.

Examples of Smile To The Future Initiatives:
• We finished over 20+ small projects in Kenya and Sri Lanka, including: building a water purification system, biogas digester, solar panels for people in slums; building sustainable farms, orphan houses, training centers for social entrepreneurs—and many more small projects.

• Mind Your Business summit: an annual event where organisations, investors and startups mix together to accelerate social entrepreneurship.

• Starters Valley: A hub for startups and social businesses in one inspiring space in Maastricht and Euregion. With trainers, community managers and coaches, we help to accelerate these social entrepreneurs to make a bigger impact.
