The Association SOPRO- Solidarity and Promotion, is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) for Development and Cooperation, nonprofit, founded in 1996 and situated in Barcelinhos, Portugal. SOPRO is recognized as Non-Governmental Organization for Development by Foreign Affairs Ministry and it is member of Portuguese Platform of NGO since January 2002. In all the work development, the source of the Association’s funds depends, primarily, on donations from private individuals and legal persons, with the intention that the actions are implemented in solidarity with the victims of social injustice and poverty. Currently SOPRO has about 900 associate members of which about 50 are effective associates. Our mission is the “youth's education on solidarity and promotion of cooperation projects for human development in the world”. As an inspiration to future work, SOPRO’s vision is: “to be recognized as a consistent NGO with it's mission and values in it’s activities. To be a promoting actor of the participation of all and, in particular, of young people as witnesses and channel for the solidarity”.SOPRO develops activities and projects at local and international level, guided by the following values: solidarity, cooperation, education as an universal right, integrity, justice, respect and voluntary work. SOPRO has made Millennium Development Goals, presented by United Nations in 2000, it’s own purposes (particularly the first three points), so SOPRO works to “1 – Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; 2 - Achieve Universal Primary Education; 3 – Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women; 4 – Reduce Child Mortality; 5 – Improve Maternal Health; 6 – Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases; 7 – Ensure Environmental Sustainability; 8 – Global Partnership for Development”.In Barcelos area, SOPRO is developing several projects, among them: Voluntariado de Proximidade (working voluntary in close territory), Banco de Material Escolar (School Supply Bank), cooperation with other European entities in education and job programs – Uma Oportunidade na Alemanha (An Opportunity in Germany) – and SOPRO Feminino (Femenin SOPRO, a project dedicated to Gender Equality and Non-Gender Violence).Internationally, SOPRO's work is focused in Mozambique, in Beira region and in Sofala’s catholic missions (ESMABAMA – Estaquinha, Mangunde, Barada and Machanga), where SOPRO's staff works as volunteer for a short or long period. The intervention's goal in Mozambique is to make possible the Universal access to education. The Mozambican children, that otherwise would not have access to education, are supported by two adoption programs, Um Euro faz Sorrir (One Euro makes smile), Apadrinhamento (Be a Godfather to a Child), and Voluntariado Internacional (International Voluntary Work) and other donations. At a national and international level, SOPRO’s intervention are at the levels of education, health, human, civic and Christian formation. Therefore, in their luggage, our volunteers, could take the willing of teaching and learn. Teaching in base of education, learning with happiness and hopeful opportunity of teaching learn fully. At this perspective, international volunteering permits a rich trade of cultures, knowledge and experiences. Therefore, to be an international volunteer it´s the representation of personal and social development, it’s the way for applying to the open mentality and make a great group of work that it permits exchanges at the level of personality, intervention and, in a poetical view, life.

Participants with fewer opportunities

  • Other experience, infrastructure and resources:

SOPRO is open, motivated and prepared to receive volunteers with fewer opportunities, being it based on social, educational, economical, geographical or cultural obstacles. We always follow our objectives, such has to promote equality in opportunities, rights and duties, without distinction as to gender, nationality and political orientation. In that spot, our values are always present: a) Solideraty e cooperation has a base and the primary tool for human-being’s development; b) Education as poverty eradication and social changes impulse; c) Integraty on associations’ work, considered by the respect for ethical rules and good practices; and d) Justice and respect of cultural and social differences. Developing the volunteers’ process, we always create an attentive local team to support and ensure the personal accompaniment of volunteers. On a larger vision, we also promote the connection with other entities to accommodate and/or to support the volunteers’ health and social protection. Therefore SOPRO promotes transdisciplinarity, autodetermination and mutualism, helping each other. As services, we can offer what we offer our employees and national volunteers, namely office suppliance (including free access to internet and telephone, mailing costs) and transportation to our events (internal and external meetings, other events of SOPRO’s interest such as seminars or workshops and correspondent participation fee). As part of EVS, language course is guaranteed; a basic level of portuguese will be crucial throughout the project, allowing the communication with the local, rural community as well as with the local institutions we are partners. International volunteers’ role is to engage in SOPRO’s activities and campaigns as regular national volunteers do; to promote international cooperation in particular with organisations of their home country; to allow the exchange of culture and knowledge with local community and SOPRO’s members.
