The Universal Esperanto Association (UEA) is a democratically governed international NGO founded in 1908. UEA is the largest international organisation for Esperanto speakers, having members and member organisations in more than 120 countries all over the world.UEA defends the richness of cultural and language diversity, rights of language minorities and provides spaces for intercultural dialogue. UEA facilitates international communication and nurtures among its members a strong sense of solidarity while strengthening understanding and respect for other peoples, without any discrimination based on e.g. nationality, race, sex, religion, politics or mother tongue(s). Furthermore, UEA is an important publisher, has the largest Esperanto bookstore in the world, provides the secretariat for the annual World Esperanto Congress (with 700-6000 participants), runs an information center and takes care of an important library.While politically neutral and independent, UEA has always taken an active stance against any kind of discrimination and supported many initiatives furthering this goal. Furthermore, UEA has official relationships with the United Nations and with UNESCO and regularly takes part in their conferences, assemblies, initiatives, symposiums and activities.
