description of organisation

Society for Help and Self-Help for the homeless Kings of the Street is an independent non-profit humanitarian organization. It was founded in 2005 with the aim of bringing together professionals, volunteers and others interested and working in the field of homelessness and related phenomena of social exclusion. The aims of our NGO include studying, exploring and researching homelessness, organising preventive activities, improving living conditions and opportunities for the homeless, developing innovative models of practical work in the field of homelessness, and publishing in this area. Programs conducted by the Kings of the Street Society are aimed at improving living condition for the homeless and other socially excluded population groups. Since 2005 we have developed many programmes like day drop-in centre, publishing a monthly street paper Kings of the street, which is sold by the homeless people, programmes of field and outreach work, housing support, the University under the stars educational programme and a project of social entrepreneurship (second hand shop). Development of the programs is based on identifying the needs of socially excluded individuals, on the continuous evaluation and response to change. Volunteers and students doing their practical placements are regularly involved in carrying out our programmes.Volunteers and students are included in all areas of our work. On the first place here is day centre, opened every working day from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 16:00, there volunteers make the first contact and get to know our users. With time and experience volunteers get more responsibilities and obligations in daily centre, some of them are: distribution of the street newspaper, sterile needles, clothing, humanitarian help, helping the homeless in use of computers, playing board games, assistance in writing articles for the newspaper, counselling, etc. From 12:00 to 14:00 volunteers can join different workshops organised by our staff members or other volunteers, some of the workshops are: creative writing, drama, fine arts, video, music, language, computer... In this term volunteers are welcomed to organise different activities for our users and staff. In past most of our international volunteers organized different language and artistic workshops. Besides that, our organization has a football team which meets every Tuesday from 15:00 to 17:00, volunteers are welcome to join and give their contribution to our team. Those volunteers who enjoy wiritng can contribute their time to our street newspaper: writing articles, helping users in writing articles, writing life stories, reports, news, photo stories etc. Volunteers are always welcome in our field work. With field work we try to reach people which are not coming to our daily centre, but they still need support. On the streets we are distributing our newspaper, searching for new writers and sellers of newspaper, informing marginalised people about activities of our and other organizations working in this field, so we try to support them toward positive changes in their lives. Beside that we organise special touristic tours where people with experience of homelessness guide small groups, telling them their stories from the streets of Ljubljana. Volunteers are welcome to help us organising tours, creating different promotional material, English language support to our guides on tours etc. One of our main programs is housing support within which we provide safe housing for homeless, counselling for people with experiences of homelessness, trying to include them in social, economic and health system and widen their social network. With this project we try to prevent homelessness and magnify social cohesion and solidarity. Practically this means that we have 6 supported apartments where 24 persons live at this moment. Every week users and staff have collective lunch meeting in their home where we try to resolve eventual conflicts and support theme in inclusion to different spheres of social life. Volunteers would have opportunity to be a part of team which is responsible for housing support.

Participants with fewer opportunities

  • This organisation has additional mentoring or other support suitable for young people with social obstacles, educational difficulties, cultural differences or similar.
  • Other experience, infrastructure and resources:

The basic activity of our NGO is empowering people with fewer opportunities. For this aim we have built a spectrum of different activity opportunities and supported social networks. As already mentioned we are 20 employed, mostly social workers and social pedagogues with long and rich experiences in working with marginalised groups of people facing extreme poverty and homelessness. With years we developed skills and strategies for conflict resolving (mediating, collaborating, compromising, accommodating...) social inclusion methods, social intervening in situations of extreme hardships, structuring working time, leadership etc. All this knowledges and experiences will help us in integration of new volunteers in our organisation. Beside that one of our employed is ex. Erasmus student which decided to stay in our organization. This experience of being a volunteer ensure high level of understanding the situation and needs of our future volunteers.
