description of organisation

The Portuguese Multiple Sclerosis Society (SPEM) is a Portuguese IPSS founded in 1984 with the mission to improve the quality of life of people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) by attending them through several social services, as well supporting their caregivers and relatives.
SPEM develops its activities in different but complementary areas: on one hand it works with public powers and national competent authorities in social and health areas, in order to promote a higher efficiency in spreading the information about MS disease and access to the related therapies; on the other hand, it provides integrated and multidisciplinary support through specialized services such as the Ocupational Activities Center, Neurorehabilitation Centre, Home care, Psychology, Social Work or Juridical Support.

Main regular activities developed are:
- in the Occupational Activities Centre: Improvisation theatre; Manual activities; Festive seasons themed events; Relaxing and Cognitive stimulation activities.
- in Social Work (EM’Laço Project): Home visits to support socially isolated people; Outdoor activities; Cognitive stimulation activities;
Fine motor skills activities.
Sporadic events: Awareness and fundraising campaigns; World MS Day and MS Patient National Day.

Counting on more than 2.700 active members, SPEM has its headquarters in Lisbon but it is present in several areas throughout Portugal (at the moment 9 delegations and 1 "núcleo") and continuing extending its reach to more and more people affected by MS, as it is estimated that there are more than 8.000 patients suffering from MS.
