Our Differences Are Our Beauty!
We were six young people who are from different departments of Yıldırım Beyazıt University. Even though we had different characteristics, hobbies and physical appearances, we all had two things in common. The first thing was we are the members of Yıldırım Beyazıt University Social Responsibilities Project Club and the second thing that we had in common was we all wanted to join an international social responsibility project. We were aware of Eurodesk and National Agency, however we had no idea about how to write or carry on a project. Therefore, we went to Projects Office of our university which is at the same time Eurodesk Contact Point. We had a chance to know ''Healthy Generations project group'' in that day. We both obtained information about National Agency projects in general and participated to a successful project.
The first process of writing and conducting a project is finding the idea to work on. Therefore, at first, we tried to find a theme for our project to write about. Finding an idea was really easy, since we had an active and enthusiastic team. We decided to write a project about ''beauty'' which is a part of our lives. No matter how old we are, we aim at being beautiful/handsome. Then, what was the real beauty? We wished that all people shall be aware of their beauty with every physical and characteristic specialness. Because when a person have self-confidence, that person will eventually have empathy for others too. If everybody thinks in that way, every person will be tolerant and self-confident and that makes a society powerful.
The second step was starting to write the project and finding the partners. Since we decided our activities and we had our goal, that process didn't tucker out us too. The thing we need to do was finding our project partner group and to put our thoughts down in black and white. There were some helpful partner-finding websites from which we benefited to find our lovely partner team ''Asociatia Renato'' from Romania. After writing and sending our project, we had nothing to do except waiting for the answer that stated whether our project is accepted or not.
The time, when we learnt that our project is accepted by National Agency, we were so happy that we celebrated together the news. Because the approval of the project would help us visit Romania, entertain our Romanian partners, perform a theater and make a short-movie. Yes we were the young people with great dreams, but we had no chance to realize our dreams without budget. Thanks to National Agency, it provided us financial support and helped us make our dreams come true.
After the approval of our project, everything went so fast. National Agency gave a seminar about ''How to Conduct a Project'. We had great times during the project period under the favour of above-mentioned seminar. Then, what did we achieve during the project period? Firstly, we conducted a survey on perception of beauty with the students of pre-high school who are our target group. Secondly we wrote a theatre according to the survey results and the interviews that were made with experts.
We went to Romania in order to talk about our project and introduce our team to our partner group. We shot a short movie about perception of beauty. As soon as our partner group arrived in Turkey, our activity week began. During the time, we performed the theatre show in schools, we prepared a photography exhibition and visited senior centers. We visited Ankara's and then Cappadocia's all four sides. These trips were important for us to recognize that we were European citizens and the trips make us gain the sense of cultural sympathy. We wished that all participants would be aware of their talents, therefore we organized Ebru and Ceramic workshops. Turkish and Roman Culture Nights were arranged. They were very helpful to understand different cultures, cuisines and dances. Our activity week was over in the twinkling of an eye, however our activities lasted longer. We made interviews with Assis.Prof.Dr.Esra Çalık and writer Senem Arıcı who is known as ''writer of no obstacle''. All activities was published on a website which belonged to our project.
The project of ''Our Differences are Our Beauty'' taught us a lot. We learnt how to be together while performing different tasks. We learnt being an orchestra while we were different musical instruments which hadn't the same sounds. We made not noise but a cheerful concert... Yes we were far different from each other, however these distinctions were not an obstacle to be a union, to be in a harmony. Yes we were different, but these differences didn't make us ugly, they made us ''special''. That project meant a lot to us. It taught us being a team, making the impossible possible and meeting in the common points.
We, as YBU-SRPC team, advice you to take roles in these kinds of projects. Because that project changed our lives, from the first day when we decided to write it down.
