Be a volunteer in summer camps for children in vulnerable situations

Tumult vzw (this is our office!)

Mechelen, Belgium

This placement is closed, you cannot apply.

Project description

We would like EVSers to participate in our summer camps as youth leaders and/or cooks. The camps have as target group social vulnerable children & youth (6-15 year): with a social and economic difficult background, from which many are refugees. We want to fulfill their right to leisure time and rest. You will guide the youth in free time activities: playing games, sports,... and will intensively work together with a team of local volunteers: there are always at least 6 leaders and a team of 3 to 4 cooks. A camp lasts 9 days in total (2 days of preparation without the children) Also the volunteers are a very diverse group. You can decide from camp to camp what they prefer to do: one week being a monitor for the children, the other one a cook. The kids stay sleeping at camp, so they also need guidance the whole day: you wake them up, if it are young kids you help them with dressing, you eat all the meals together. You will for sure develop 'TALENT FOR LIVING TOGETHER'! (Our slogan).

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

The accommodation during the camps will be at the camp locations. These aren't luxury accommodations but with all necessary basic equipment (sanitary, kitchen, beds,...). Volunteers will share a room with other volunteers (and sometimes with children, depending on their age). So privacy will be limited, it is an intense living together. There are different camp locations, depending on the period. Camps take place mainly in rural, nature areas. Outside of the camp periods, you will stay or in a host family of a local volunteer or in a hostel. These days are free days, to rest, relax & reflect.

Training during the project

Where possible, you will be given the opportunity to participate in the Training & Evaluation cycle organized by NA’s. If not we as organization will organize a suitable alternative. As we are looking for a short term volunteer, language training in the form of courses cannot be offered. We must note that the main language in which all the activities and meetings take place, is Dutch. But there will always be volunteers who can help you by translating. Surrounded by our diverse group of volunteers you can practice your language skills.

Volunteer profile

As we are offering only short term volunteering opportunities, we only accept volunteers with fewer opportunities (f.e cultural differences or economic, social or geographical obstacles). We will mentor and support you! You do not need to have previous experience with children, but what is important is soft skills & the right attitude (f.e. communication skills, caring or playful, open for teamwork, interested in diversity and cultures...) It is not necessary that you know Dutch as other volunteers will help you translate. Some of them are also still learning Dutch so that is OK!
