Vispo Volunteer Initiative for Sustainable Rivers
ERI Hungary Nonprofit Ltd.
Project descriptionPolluted waters, cemented banks and open-air dumps. This is sadly a quite common view on the Danube shores, the rivers of Hungary, as well as on its tributaries. Rather a big rubbish deposal than a unique bio-diversity jewel, an ecosystem and economical resource for our territory. This is the main reason why the initiative VisPO was created: the project will have a duration of 3 years and will involve 20 volunteers aged between 18 and 30 in actions of cleaning and valorisation of the Danube river banks and its tributaries on Duna-Ipoly National Park territory. Volunteers from Hungary and Italy will clean up the Danube and take samples of the water for later analysis while kayaking on the river (most probably from Esztergom to Óbuda). Participation in researches on water quality, studies on social and economic impacts are also foreseen. Sport + Fun + Sustainable environment - these are our driving forces!
Accommodation, food and transport arrangementsThe project is meant to have a local impact; hence volunteers will be selected in terms of proximity to the Natura 2000 sites selected for action in order to strengthen the link between volunteers and the territory, Therefore, accommodation is not foreseen and transport shifts should not exceed 50km distance using public transport. At least one meal provision is foreseen during the volunteering sessions.
Training during the projectBesides cleaning up the rivers, Volunteers focus on researches on environmental issues to contribute to sustainability and widen knowledge. 8 hours generic training provides volunteers in-depth knowledge about pollution in rivers and civic awareness. The technical training will be based on a 4 hours session (partially held in English) to give a more specific overview on river invasive species, alert systems and eco-systems. Volunteers will also be offered the role to pass on their knowledge and change attitude and behaviour in society for a cleaner nature.
Volunteer profileThe volunteers we are looking for are already motivated by environmental awaress: they are curious, dynamic and eager to do "the dirty job"; they are willing to clean up rivers but also to discover which possibilities for water sports and leisure time can a river offer: they want to understand how protecting and respecting the environment can be also fun. Furthermore they want to widen their knowledge on environmental issues and be willing to be ambassador of the creation of a European Solidarity Corps in schools, universities and society in general.
