Project 6: Drama for Social Change
Crooked House Theatre Company
The application deadline has passed.
Project descriptionWe are a youth-theatre organisation. This opportunity is for 1 year. It's only for those aged 22-30. EVS participants will be helping to run drama workshops, so experience of making theatre will be essential. There's also administration associated with the job (keeping records of young people, scheduling shows, updating our social media and website, etc). Our work is with young adults who are interested in theatre & in acting. We run lots of drama workshops (devising theatre, actor training, performance techniques etc) and stage plays. Our EVS volunteers come from youth-theatres in their own country. Or they are actors, or they study Applied Theatre, or Drama in Education. While they are with us they will be running drama workshops with teenagers. They will also get the chance to direct and to devise plays. And they will get the chance to be in performances themselves. Experience in theatre-making is crucial to apply. http://www.kildareyouththeatre.com/volunteer-with
Accommodation, food and transport arrangementsAccommodation is with a host family in the town of Newbridge. You will have your own room and use of the kitchen/bathroom and other common areas of the house. Some of the families have teenagers who are in our youth theatre. Some houses, though comfortable and safe, are about 2km from the centre of the town where we are based. Therefore we have bicycles which you can use for the year. From the grant we receive, we pay €300 to the family for rent per month and the rest is given to you (plus your allowance) for food and supplies monthly. 2 of your flights are paid for (within the budget).
Training during the projectFor the first six weeks volunteers will learn with experienced, professional theatre facilitators & directors. You may choose to become involved in any of the performance projects we do with our young people. During this time you will try out some ideas with the group under supervision and feedback. Training will also be given in acting - you'll get the chance to be in performances. You'll also learn devising & rehearsal methods. You will be helping with workshops in our centre, and in local schools and youth projects. For this project you must be aged 22 to 30.
Volunteer profileAged 22 - 30. Volunteers should have experience in drama, or acting. Ideally, they will come from a youth theatre, or acting course. If they do not have this experience, they should have studied theatre or drama. Or they should have directed plays for the stage. The most ideal volunteer is one who has this experience, and who would like to try out new form of theatre with young people. perhaps they'd like to experiment with theatre, or learn new facilitation skills. They should be outgoing, very able to work independently, be curious, and be respectful of young people and their opinions.
