Activity description

Support the running and development of Lockerbrook Farm Outdoor Centre and the offer it makes to visiting educational and youth groups. The centre offers residential accommodation for schools, youth and community groups and is open all year. We hope that the Volunteer placements will contribute and have a lasting impact on the site, whether that is through developing and facilitating activities for other young people, the creation of art or helping to develop our online presence. The work is varied, enjoyable and people-centred, with lots of opportunities to develop the role in line with the interests and skills of the volunteer. There are some routine warden tasks that the role includes these range from welcoming groups, site maintenance, admin tasks and ensuring the site is kept clean and tidy by our visitors

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

When supporting groups on site we will provide you with accommodation in the Warden Flat at Lockerbrook with kitchenette and shower room. You will have access to the Lockerbrook Centre office with wifi and phone. As the role will also involve supporting our local groups in Sheffield (30 mins by car) you will also be accommodated by one of our volunteers in the city. You will have your own room in a household with other young adults. You will be given a food budget and be expected to shop for and prepare your own meals. Lifts will be offered, you could cycle or catch the bus.

Training during the activity

You will have an induction on arrival to the Woodcraft Folk together with other ESC volunteers. There will also be a mid term and end of placement workshop. There will be an initial orientation and introduction to the local area, transport routes and a structured induction to the centre and our systems, Safeguarding and Health and Safety. Further training will be arranged depending on the needs of each volunteer (Outdoor skills, first aid, Forest Schools and bushcraft, website

Participant profile

Volunteers who are excited about the prospect of working alongside other volunteers and with children and young people in a co-operative rural environment. Experience in youth work and outdoor education, as a participant or as a leader Passionate about engaging other children and young people with nature and outdoor education Committed to a collaborative approach to working but also comfortable to working in a very small team and sometimes on your own in a remote setting.
