Jeunesse et Reconstruction

Durban-sur-Arize, France

The application deadline has passed.

Activity description

The purpose of this project is to raise public awareness of the importance of historical heritage in connection with active citizenship. The castle of St-Barthélemy, in the village of Durban-sur-Arize (part of the Regional Natural Park of the Ariège Pyrenees), will host the ESC project and a group of 12 young volunteers for 2 weeks. During this project, the volunteers will work on the conservation and maintenance of the ruins of the castle, which is under an administrative protection, being a Historical Monument. While they are in Durban, they will invite the local youth to make them discover this heritage and also the action carried out by these European volunteers. The young people will work in the morning and the afternoon will be dedicated to visits and discovering the country of Couserans, its history and its future. Meetings will be set up with local associations. No specific skills are expected outside of the will to commit.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteers will be housed in tents on the castle’s territory. Important: the accommodation conditions are simple (dry toilets and solar showers), nature lovers might enjoy. The access to the castle is only on foot (15 minutes of steep path from the village, volunteers should be careful for their travel bags and might prefer a backpack). We can’t take care of volunteers who arrive before the start date. Volunteers have to come to the nearest station by their own means. From there, a campleader will take them to the living place.

Training during the activity

Through work and group life: - Techniques related to historical heritage maintenance - Knowledge about heritage - Learn how to live in a group - Communicating in a multicultural group - Adapting ideas and projects in their contexts - Capacity to self-assess in a group Through the program as a whole: - Autonomy - Solidarity - Adaptability - Other soft skills

Participant profile

The team will be made of 3 groups of 4 people per nationality: France, Italy, Spain; with a gender balance. We’ll give priority to young people who don’t have the opportunity to travel outside their country. We are willing to include young people with fewer opportunities (40% of the group) and refugees if possible. Speaking English or French, or being already engaged in an association are pluses. Age: 18-30 No handicapped.
