Village transition platform / strengthening Democracy

ZERAP Germany e.V.

Steinhöfel, Germany

The application deadline has passed.

Activity description

We host the initiative Dörfer im Aufbruch (literally “villages on the move”), which empowers citizens to take action and shape the future in their rural settings. We hope to expand the database of "inspiring best practice examples" used at doerfer-imaufbruch.de to examples from numerous other countries. Also, our MOOC and project moderation videos, currently only available in German, could reach many more people if it had English subtitles. At the same time, we are starting a village project in Steinhöfel to conceptualise and implement a 24/7 village store, and want to build a prototype for villagers to overcome technical fears on the farm. This project can use support mostly in research and translation work, also networking and bringing people together - and in practical building. The project addresses a societal need to empower people especially in rural settings, thereby strengthening our democracy and supporting projects to be formed, overcome challenges and ultimately succeed.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Your room is hosted on a historical farm in Steinhöfel in the home of our chairman and his wife. Your workplace is located in a small co-working space on that farm. Your apartment (shared with other volunteers) hosts a kitchen to prepare your own food, one meal a week is shared with everyone in the small farm community. A drivers license is helpful if you want to be independent to reach the supermarkets and train in Fürstenwalde (10 minute drive) in your free time!

Training during the activity

Expect to get to know dozens of amazing projects and initiatives that give hope and future perspectives to towns and villages. Learn from our many years of experience in coaching and consulting project teams as to the difficulties and obstacles - the solutions to which we try to offer in our MOOC and videos. You'll learn to work with multi-lingual websites in wordpress, understand the technical details of automated stores, get an overview of regional food producers as suppliers - and build a prototype store with us! Not least, of course, you'll immerse in German culture.

Participant profile

You need good skills in research and information gathering, not just online but by talking to people, and summarizing that information into succinct texts. Fluent English is a necessity. Over time, it would be great if your German improved to a level where with the help of Deepl, you can translate / subtitle some of our German content to English. Some manual skills and technical understanding would be appreciated. An interest in rural life and in socio-economic challenges villages face in Europe is welcome. A respect for (changing) Corona-rules and recommendations is an absolute must.
