ZERAP Germany e.V.
The application deadline has passed.
Activity descriptionWe are always experimenting and researching around the area of sustainable agricultural practices and self-sufficiency – often rediscovering old knowledge which was forgotten over time. Carbonisation of soils, permaculture, grey-water irrigation, edible forest gardens and many more are areas we are investigating. In Steinhöfel, we have begun creating a showcase area for many of our findings. Several hundred plants have already been planted to begin creating our emerging edible forest garden; in 2021, we are building a mandala plot with hugelkultur and a permaculture forest greenhouse from old windows. To be able to host visitors, we are also building separation toilets and installing a grey water system which recycles the grey water from the farm. A rainwater catchment will also be installed. We are also integrating rare breeds of chickens into our farming system. Informative labeling and documenting our progress is also important.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangementsYour room is hosted on a historical farm in Steinhöfel in the home of our chairman and his wife. Your workplace is located in a small co-working space as well as on the grounds of that farm. Your apartment (shared with other volunteers) hosts a kitchen to prepare your own food, one meal a week is shared with everyone in the small farm community. A drivers license is helpful if you want to be independent to reach the supermarkets and train in Fürstenwalde (10 minute drive) in your free time.
Training during the activityThe participant should learn new skills, become aware of what is already possible and living reality today - and ideally be inspired to initiate changes in their own lives, neighbourhoods and work settings. We believe that knowledge leads to empowerment, enabling people to make informed decisions and getting into the driver's seat of their lives. Expect to learn from our many years of experience, learn German, learn about permaculture, zero emissions farming and ecosystems... and to have fun!
Participant profileWe are looking for open-minded young people with strengths and/or interests in sustainable farming practices, working both with animals as well as plants - a hands-on mentality is helpful! A certain level of technical affinity would be welcome, as well as experience with physical labour. If you don't speak German (yet), sound English is a prerequisite to ensure we can work and communicate together seamlessly. We hope you want to get to know us as much as we want to get to know you! A respect for (changing) Corona-rules and recommendations is an absolute must.
