Project descriptionThe project will take place in the “Centre pour le Développement Moteur”, a public school for physically and mentally disabled children and adolescents, from age 3 to 18, in Strassen, close to Luxembourg-city. The school provides individualised education, addressing the individual and specific needs of the pupils. Most of the +/-60 pupils are in wheelchairs and they have quite different cultural backgrounds. The spoken language in the school is "Lëtzebuergesch" and German and French are used in written communication. The volunteers will assist the teachers, social pedagogues, nurses and therapists. He/she will have the role of assistant to support pupils who are not able to work on their own.
Accommodation, food and transport arrangementsThe ESC-volunteers will live together with other volunteers in a living-community in a house in Eisenborn, some 30 minutes outside Luxembourg-city. Service national de la jeunesse, as a coordinating organisation, manages this house. The coordinator is also taking care of the monthly allowances for pocket money and food allowance. Public transport is free for the whole country.
Training during the projectThe volunteer will be coached and supported by a mentor and a supervisor. During the first weeks, he/she will slowly/carefully be introduced in the daily tasks in school, will get an insight into the daily routine of the project and will learn the used methods .A physiotherapist shows the right handling of the disabled pupils. A speech therapist shows them how to support the pupils while eating. He/she will participate in a Luxembourgish language course (evening classes). The volunteers are supposed to attend the On-Arrival Training and the Midterm Evaluation.
Volunteer profileCandidates should: be aged between 18and 29, have ease in social contacts, have a sense of responsibility & be interested in social work. They should be motivated to work with disabled children and young people on a very basic level, which requires patience, initiative and creativity. Basic language skills in DE or FR are requested in order to allow communication with our target group. Creative skills in all fields are very welcomed. We try to give feedback to applicants within 7 days, but only if the profile meets the set criteria and if a targeted motivation and a complete CV are available.
