Project description

The supported housingproject is a village house (60 km and about 2 hours from St. Petersburg) where people with disabilities live with the support and assistance of specialists and volunteers. This project is being implemented in cooperation with the Orthodox Church community. This project allows such people to lead a decent life and live independently (not in a state boarding school and without parents). The house is inhabited by 7adults (from 21 to 48 years) with different features of development. Together with experts, they learn to maintain the house, build relationships with neighbors and take the initiative. Three times a week they help in the Church, clean the area, plant a garden. Also, three times a week, residents of the house (2 people) go to the workshops in St. Petersburg. Daily duties of the volunteer: The main activity of the volunteer is the care of wards and the organization of their free time. The volunteer helps his wards in workshops,music and painting.

Accommodation, food and transport arrangements

Volunteers live in 2 room apartments located in the village. Each volunteer lives in a separated room. An apartment is equipped with a washing machine, refrigerator, stove and necessary furniture. Apartments will be provided with Internet connection; however, a volunteer shall pay for it. Every month volunteers are given travel cards to get to work. Every month volunteer received 110 euro on food and 90 euro for pocket expenses. Volunteer receives language course about 2 months. The volunteer is compensated for travel to St. Petersburg and back four times a month.

Training during the project

On-arrival workshop (The aim is to get acquainted with each other, tell our volunteers about our organization, and show them how to work with people with physical and mental disabilities), Mid-term workshop, Final workshop (We summarize final results, share our future plans) Workshops and consultations related to specific subjects, e.g. work with people with autism spectrum disorders, playing possibilities for children, etc. Holidays / travel (e.g. travel to Moscow, Velikiy Novgorod, Christmas celebration). Supervision with a psychologist (every 3 months). First-aid workshop.

Volunteer profile

This project is for those who love the countryside and privacy. The village is surrounded by beautiful clean lakes, pine forest and Northern nature of Karelia. Two main ski centers of St. Petersburg are located nearby.
