Juvenes Translatores 2017: translation contest for schools

The competition is designed to give 17-year-olds (born in 2000) from schools throughout Europe first-hand experience of what it is like to be a translator.

Participants should translate as if writing for young people of their own age, to help them understand a message written in another language. The question all translators have to ask themselves is: 'How can I get the message across?' A good translation should have the same impact on the reader as the original text.

Participants will be judge for:

  • the accuracy of their text
  • their ability to use terms correctly
  • their ability to write fluently in their chosen language i.e. the general readability of their translation
  • the creativity of their solutions.

Young students will be given the opportunity to take part in a translation test that will take place on the same day in all EU countries: 23 November 2017.

Pupils will be able to decide which of the European Union's official languages they want to translate to and from. This year's theme will be the "European Year for Development".

Schools across Europe are invited to register on the contest website by 20 October 2017, 12:00 CET.

The awards ceremony will take place in Brussels, in Spring 2018.
