If you want to discover new cultures, learn new languages and meet different people from around the globe but your bank account is empty, then here are some tips and ideas on alternative ways of travel abroad.
Travel by working
§ WWOOF links volunteers with organic farmers and growers around the world, who offer you food and accommodation in return for your help in wine-making or pig-rearing. There’s a £15 membership fee to access the list of hosts.
§ World packers. Exchange your video editing abilities for food and accommodation in Brazil. This is one example of the ‘skills for accommodation’ scheme that characterises World packers. Travellers need to pay a fee when their placement is confirmed.
§ Workaway. Help out for a few hours a day, for example on a horse farm, in exchange for food and accommodation. To access the list of hosts you need to pay a fee of EUR 29.
§ Summer Jobs is a website where you can search for seasonal jobs in camps, amusement parks, resorts, national parks, hotels, environmental organisations and more.
§ World Nomads Scholarships gives you the opportunity to travel while learning about photography, writing and film making. Winners get the opportunity to learn from professional storytellers. Scholarship covers food and travel costs in a 2-week trip.
§ House Sitting. When a family goes abroad they need someone to take care of their property, do the gardening or look after their dog. You can be that person! House-sitting involves staying at someone’s house for free in exchange for taking care and maintaining their home. It’s a win-win! Here are some platforms: Nomador, Mindmyhouse, Trustedhousesitters.
§ EU Aid Volunteers provides you with the opportunity to volunteer around the world in humanitarian aid projects in disaster-affected communities.
§ European Solidarity Corps is the new European Union initiative which creates opportunities for young people to volunteer or work on projects in their own country or abroad that benefit communities and people around Europe.
