It’s important for everyone to know their rights when it comes to buying, selling and renting goods and services.

Why consumers rights? 

It’s important for everyone to know their rights when it comes to buying, selling and renting goods and services. It goes without saying that it’s easiest to cheat those who are least informed of their rights and the laws in place. The chances are that young people belong to that group. That’s why it’s time to familiarize yourself with these issues.       

Who protects my consumer rights in Iceland ? 

Several Institutions and organisations protect the interests and rights of consumers in Iceland. 
  • The first would be The Consumer Agency. It’s one of the governmental agencies in Iceland which is entrusted with market surveillance of business operators, good functioning and transparency of the markets with respect to safety and consumers’ legal rights as well as enforcement of legislation adopted by the Icelandic Parliament for protection of consumer health, legal and economical rights. 
  • Second is The Consumers' Association of Iceland. It is an independent consumers' organization with head office in Reykjavík and a local office in Akureyri, the main city in the north of the country. Their main areas of work are promoting and protecting the interests of consumers, representing the consumers and undertaking comparative testing of consumer goods and services, stating consumers' views to the authorities, trade, industry etc., giving assistance in individual cases, consumers' education and information.
  • Third is the Competition Authority, a government agency. Their object is to promote effective competition in business activities. The Competition Authority is charged with the task of preventing unreasonable barriers and restrictions on freedom in business operations, preventing harmful oligopoly and restriction of competition and facilitating the access of new competitors to the market.
  • Fourth is the Consumer Spokesman who is required by law to protect the interests and rights of consumers, promote the rights and rules of consumer rights and enhance further consumer protection.

Where can you send inquiries and suggestions regarding consumer rights?

If you feel that your right has been violated and can’t find information about it in any of the websites mentioned above, you can send inquiries to the Consumer Spokesman or send anonynous tips to the the consumer agency
