GREATER NICOSIA IN THE FINAL FOR THE EUROPEAN YOUTH CAPITAL TITLE 2021
As of Friday, 16th March, Greater Nicosia’s candidacy was officially cleared on to the next and final phase of the competition. The candidacy was officially submitted last January by the Aglantzia municipality. This is the first time a city from Cyprus clears the initial phase.
In the final phase, with 4 other candidate cities, Greater Nicosia will submit its detailed programming. The European Youth Capital for 2021 will be awarded next November in Novi Sad (Serbia). The other four candidate cities are: Yaroslavl (Russia), Chisinau (Moldova), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Varazdin (Croatia).
The European Youth Capital title is awarded to one European municipality for the period of one year, during which the city has the opportunity to implement a multi-faceted program for the cultural, political, social, financial and entrepreneurial involvement of young people.
For the Greater Nicosia 2021 effort, the following institutions have joined forces: the municipalities of Aglantzia, Strovolos and Nicosia, the Cyprus Youth Council, the Youth Board of Cyprus, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the University of Nicosia, the University of Cyprus, CYTA, Telia & Pavla BBDO, PwC, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Nicosia Tourism Board and multiple non-governmental organisations and youth associations from all communities of Cyprus.
The Greater Nicosia 2021 team – comprised of Spiros Pisinos (Managing Director), Diomedes Koufteros (Artistic Director) and Sotiris Christoforou (Administrative Officer) – is working to secure the EYC title, promote the city as a dynamic European youth capital and empower young people through their engagement and participation.
