I can end poverty, you can end poverty, we can end poverty
In September 2000, world leaders adopted the United Nations Millennium Declaration. This project aims to reduce extreme poverty, hunger and disease by 2015 . The eight Millennium Development Goals were designed to achieve this objetive.
If you want to play an active role in this plan, first of all, you are welcome to know exactly what we are fighting against:
Goal 1: Erradicate extreme poverty & hunger
In the world, about 870 million people are estimated to be undernourished. Within this group, more than 100 million children under age five are underweight.
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will have the opportunity to finish primary school.
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Offer equal primary and secondary education preferably by 2005; and in all levels no later than 2015.
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
The under-five mortality rate should be reduced by two thirds by 2015.
Goal 5: Improve maternal health
Lower maternal mortality ratio by three quarters; furthermore, access to reproductive health should become universal.
Goal 6: Combat hiv/aids, malaria and other diseases
Access to antiretroviral therapy for HIV is still unavailable por 7 million people; in reference to malaria deaths, an 80% occur in just 14 countries.
Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability
Ensure sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation for most of the world population by 2015; at least 100 million slum dwellers should get a significant improvement in their lives conditions by 2020.
Goal 8: Develope a global partnership for development
An open and non-discriminatory trading and financial system should be redesigned giving special attention to debt problems of developing countries.
