The European Higher Education Area

The European Union proposed in the late 1990s the creation of an European Higher Education Area in which the different university educational systems converge. Today there are 47 countries forming it.

The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is an educational demarcation proposed by the European Union which forms nowadays a total of 47 countries, and which looks for a convergence between the different university educational systems.
 

Although the initiative began to take its first steps in firm in 1998, with the signature of the Sorbonne Joint Declaration  by France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, it will be on 19th June 1999 when it takes definitely form: the Bologna Declaration  is signed by thirty European countries.
 

The Bologna Process proposes an easily understandable and comparable system of qualifications, that is recognized in all the Area and, therefore, allows the graduates to practice the job for which they are qualified in any member country.
 

In fact, the new framework seeks to provide an European dimension and promotes the cooperation between different countries to ensure the quality of education, looking for the mobility of students, teachers and researchers, and administrative and services staff.
 

The degree structures is based on two main cycles: bachelor degree (generic training, 3 or 4 years duration), and postgraduate degree, which includes master (specialized training, 1 or 2 years duration) and doctorate (advanced training oriented to research).
 

In addition to the qualification itself, a Diploma Supplement is established, in which there is detailed the subjects coursed and the skills acquired in the studies.
 

A new common international credit system is created, ECTS  (European Credit Transfer System), which keeps in mind both the work of the students in class and outside it (realization of work, hours of study, …). The ECTS credit matches with around 25 or 30 hours.
 

Bologna involves, therefore, a teaching methodology that looks for the active participation of the student, and that focuses in his learning process, which has to extend along his whole life.
 

Since the process began, the education system has been gradually adapted until 2010 when, as established in Bologna, the new structure is fully working.
