Thank you for your interest in DiscoverEU. Unfortunately, the June 2018 application period is closed. But don’t worry, there will be another DiscoverEU application round in autumn 2018. You’ll have another chance to win one of the travel passes (details to be announced later).
What is DiscoverEU?
Are you 18 years old? Are you up for an adventure? If yes, get ready to explore Europe by joining DiscoverEU, an initiative of the European Union giving young people the opportunity to travel around Europe.
The first application round in June 2018 is over and the enthusiasm amongst the European young people was huge. No less than 100 480 young citizens applied for the DiscoverEU travel passes! The 15 000 young people who successfully answered the quiz and came closest to the right answer in the subsidiary question have been awarded the travel passes.
Later this year, in autumn, a second application round will take place, giving the opportunity of receiving a travel pass to another batch of young people.
Why not seize this chance to experience freedom of movement, better understand Europe’s diversity, enjoy its cultural richness, make new friends and ultimately, discover yourself?
Europe’s cultural heritage comes in many shapes and forms. DiscoverEU is a great opportunity to explore what Europe has to offer. Visit the European Capital of Culture for example (do you know which city has the honour to be the Capital of Culture this year?). Go to one of the many festivals or arts performances organised as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018. Or maybe you prefer wandering around in museums or going on a trip in a natural park? Through exploring our cultural heritage, you can discover Europe’s unity as well as its diversity, and start an intercultural conversation about what we have in common. There is so much to discover!
For the most part you will be travelling by rail allowing you to take in the endless variety of towns and stunning landscapes that our continent has to offer.
To ensure access to European citizens across the continent, the travel pass will also offer alternatives such as buses or ferries. In exceptional cases, and when no other transport means are available, travel by plane will be permitted. This will ensure that young people living in remote areas or on islands also have a chance to take part.
The first application round
The first application round took place from 12 June at 12:00 (CEST) to 26 June 2018 at 12:00 (CEST). Young people could only apply if they:
- were 18 years old on 1 July 2018 (born between 2 July 1999 and 1 July 2000 included);
- have the nationality of one of the 28 Member States of the European Union;
- filled in their ID or passport number on the online application form;

- planned to travel to at least 1 and up to 4 foreign country destinations within the EU;
- were willing to become a DiscoverEU Ambassador.
The current DiscoverEU travellers could apply as an individual or as a group of maximum 5 friends.
Following the evaluation committee that took place on 27 June, the final 15 000 winners were informed on 28 June in accordance with the award criteria. This group of winners now has the amazing opportunity to discover Europe this summer.
Next application round in autumn
A second application round will take place in autumn 2018. If you haven’t received a travel pass in the first application round, you might have another chance to win one of the travel passes in the next round.
More information will soon be announced on the European Youth Portal and on social media.
