Car insurance validity in the EU – Czech Republic

Third party motor insurance

When you move temporarily to the Czech Republic from another EU country (as a student, pensioner, second home owner, cross-border commuter), your existing insurance policy from another EU country is still valid for the period it was signed for.

If the owner of the vehicle is registered as resident in the Czech Republic, he/she must register the vehicle in the Czech Register of Vehicles. Third party liability insurance is a condition for such registration. If the insurance policy is concluded with an insurance company entitled to provide services in the Czech Republic, this existing policy can be used for the registration of the vehicle. If the existing policy has been signed with an insurer not entitled to provide services in the Czech Republic, a new policy must be concluded.

Claims history

The risk-assessment scheme typically used by vehicle insurers in the Czech Republic is called bonus/malus, and is based on the specific criteria.

The insurer, when it sets the premium, is obliged to take into account the personal claims history. In cases where no claims have been filed the insurer reduces the premium. On the contrary, in cases where claims have been made the premium is increased. The method of setting the bonus/malus scheme must be submitted for control to the Czech National Bank (supervisory authority).

If you are an EU national, insurers in the Czech Republic are not required by law to recognise your no-claims history in another EU country and factor this into your premium.

Documents issued in another EU country relating to no-claims history can be accepted but there are no conditions set by law.

Dispute resolution

If you do not agree with an insurance payout or any other decision taken by your insurer, you can contact the national court.
