Getting a driving licence in the EU – Portugal
EU driving licences - conditions
Driver training & driving test
To obtain a driving licence, you:
- must sign up with an approved driving school for at least 28 hours (category B) of theoretical instruction and 32 hours (category B) of practical training.
- must pass a theory exam and a practical test held by the Institute for Mobility and Transport (IMT, IP) or examination center authorized by IMT, IP.
Age requirement
The minimum age at which you can obtain a driving licence is:
Category A1 (up to 125 cc) | 16 years |
Category A2 (up to 35 kW cc) | 18 years |
Category A (over 35 kW cc) | 24 years (20 years if you have driving licence category A2 for at least two years or 21 years for motor tricycles with a power exceeding 15kw) |
Category B (passenger cars) | 18 years |
Fitness to drive
If you wish to renew an EU driving licence, you must undergo a medical check:
- Category A - aged equal to or above 50, 60, 65 and 70 and thereafter every two years, with no age limit (exception: when the driving licence was obtained between the ages of 25 and 30 years of age, their drivers are exempt from revalidating their driving licence when they reach the age of 30)
- Category B - aged equal to or above 50, 60, 65 and 70 and thereafter every two years, with no age limit (exception: when the driving licence was obtained between 25 and 30 years of age, their drivers are exempt from revalidating their driving licence when they reach the age of 30)
