Getting a driving licence in the EU – Estonia

Driver training & driving test

To obtain a driving licence, you:

  • must sign up with an approved driving school. Minimum amount of theoretical instruction and practical training depends upon vehicle category for which you want a driving licence,
  • must pass a theory exam and a practical test organised by a testing center of the Estonian Road Administration.

Age requirement

The minimum age at which you can obtain a driving licence is:

Category A1 (up to 125 cc) 16 years
Category A2 (up to 35 kW cc) 18 years
Category A (over 35 kW cc) 20 years, if the person has previously had A2 licence for 2 years; otherwise 24 years
Category B (passenger cars) 18 years

Fitness to drive

If you wish to renew an EU driving licence, you must undergo a medical check:

  • for category A - every 10 years, and every 5 years over the age of 65
  • for category B - every 10 years, and every 5 years over the age of 65
