Getting a driving licence in the EU – Czech Republic

EU driving licences - conditions

Driver training & driving test

To obtain a driving licence, you:

  • must sign up with an approved driving school. The length of training depends on category of driving licence,
  • must pass a theory exam and a practical test held by the commissioner.

Age requirement

The minimum age at which you can obtain a driving licence is:

Category A1 (up to 125 cc) 16 years
Category A2 (up to 35 kW cc) 18 years
Category A (over 35 kW cc) 24 years
21 years (three-wheeler)
20 years (if the driver is holder of driving licence of category A2 at least 2 years)
Category B (passenger cars) 18 years

Fitness to drive

If you wish to renew your EU driving licence (because of previous licence expiration), you do not need to undergo a medical check. But the holder of the driving licence is required to undergo a medical check 6 months before reaching 65 and 68 years of age (at the latest on your 65th and 68th birthday respectively). You subsequently have to undergo this medical check every two years.
