Driving licence renewal and exchange – Hungary

Renew your driving licence

If you are an EU citizen living in Hungary, you can apply to have your foreign driving licence renewed at the Central Office for Administrative and Electronic Public Services (KEKKH).

To be eligible for a new driving licence, you must hold a valid Hungarian licence or a licence issued by a country that is party to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic entitling you to drive in Hungary.

You will need to present the following documents:

  • a valid identity document (identity card, passport)
  • your official residence card ("lakcímkártya") or, if you are a foreign national and do not have a residence card, an official document from the immigration authorities proving your right of residence (residence permit)
  • if you are applying on behalf of somebody else, the original of the power of attorney giving you the authority to represent them
  • 2 passport-type photos
  • proof of payment of the administration fee

Fee for renewal: HUF 4 000 (unless you have reached retirement age or the medical authorities have restricted the validity of your licence to one year, in which case the fee is HUF 1 500)

You can apply for the licence in person at district government offices or government information centres (kormányablak) or at the KEKKH Document Office. The document, when ready, can be also be collected at district government offices or government information centres or the KEKKH Personal Customer Service Centre, or can be sent by post.

  • if, under the applicable legislation, the competent authority has declared you medically unfit to drive, until you are certified fit to drive again
