Driving licence validity in Slovakia
Driving licences are valid for: 15 years
The Slovak Republic issues drivers' licences with a validity period of 5 years, if the driver's licence certifies also categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, in the other cases the driving licence is issued for a period of 15 years, ie. categorie AM, A1, A2, A, B1, B, BE and T.
Driving licences for elderly drivers (older than 63) are valid for period of 5 years since the date of issue of the medical fitness. The holders of driving licences issued before 19th January 2013 are required to undergo a medical check 2 months before reaching the age of 65 at the earliest or 2 months after reaching the age of 65 at the latest. These drivers have subsequently to undergo a medical check every five years.
If you hold a driving licence for life (i.e. one that remains administratively valid for an unlimited period) that was issued by another EU country, you will not have to renew the licence after changing your usual place of residence.
Non-EU driving licences - exchange & recognition
You must exchange your non-EU driving licence within 60 days after the 185 day period since you have been granted residency in the Slovak Republic has expired.
To exchange your non-EU driving licence:
- go to the local police department corresponding to your place of residence.
- hand in the following documents:
- foreign driving licence
- valid identity document together with either a permanent residence or temporary residence document
