Driving licence recognition and validity – Austria

Driving licence validity in Austria

Driving licences are valid for 15 years.

Licences issued before 2013 will cease to be valid at the latest on 19 January 2033. Driving licences that remain valid until 2033 are subject to the proviso that the name and date on the licence are still legible and the holder is clearly recognisable from the photo.

If you hold a driving licence for life (i.e. one that remains valid in administrative terms for an unlimited period) that was issued by another EU country, you will have to exchange your licence by 19 January 2033 if you have changed your usual place of residence.

In the case of voluntary exchange of an EU or EEA driving licence, you will be required to produce the following documents:

•Passport or identity card

•Driving licence issued abroad

•Portrait photo (45 mm high by 35 mm wide) enabling easy recognition of the licence-holder (and fulfilling the criteria for passport photos, if possible)

•Where available, an extract from the driving record of the issuing country and possibly also a translation (to facilitate processing by the authorities)

•In certain cases, a residence registration certificate (to facilitate processing by the authorities)

Non-EU driving licences – recognition and exchange

You must exchange your non-EU driving licence within 6 months of moving.

To exchange your non-EU licence:

  1. You can go to any driving licence authority in Austria
  2. You will be required to produce the following documents:

    •Passport

    •Driving licence issued abroad

•In certain circumstances, a translation of the driving licence

•Portrait photo (45 mm high by 35 mm wide) enabling easy recognition of the licence-holder (and fulfilling the criteria for passport photos, if possible)

    •Medical report

•In certain cases, a residence registration certificate (to facilitate processing by the authorities)

Most driving licence authorities will require the original documents plus a copy.

In some cases, the driving licence authority may request additional documents.

If you have previously exchanged a non-EU driving licence for an EU licence in another EU country, you may continue to use it in Austria.
