Car insurance validity when travelling abroad – Ireland

Comprehensive cover when travelling abroad

Your comprehensive car insurance policy (covering theft, vandalism, legal costs, etc.) is valid for a period of up to thirty days for persons driving abroad and this will be contained in the policy document issued. Policyholders should check with their insurance company when going abroad to confirm details of cover. Companies may extend the policy cover on request.

Insurance cover for additional drivers when travelling abroad

For somebody other than the owner to drive the vehicle, they must be a named driver on the insurance policy. This also applies to family members living in the same household.

Trailers must be insured

The standard insurance policy in Ireland for vehicles also covers the trailer.

As a national of another EU country traveling with a trailer in Ireland you do not need to take out a separate policy for the trailer.
