Short description  The Health Council has evaluated the carcinogenicity of benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) and other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from coal-derived sources, to identify what concentrations of these compounds in the air are associated with a predetermined extra risk of death from cancer. This calculation is the first step to defining statutory norms for occupational exposure by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The concentration levels that correspond to the extra risks of death are as follows: extra risk of 4 per 1,000: 550 nanograms BaP per cubic metre; and, extra risk of 4 per 100,000: 5.7 nanograms BaP per cubic metre. The Council is also recommending a ‘skin notation’ to protect workers against cancer risk through skin contact.
